Today Little Langdale is so peaceful and secluded you could be forgiven for thinking it has always been this way. However, take a walk around the valley and you soon come across evidence of a bustling industrial past.
After what seems a very long time indeed, it made us extremely happy to be able to welcome guests back to the Three Shires Inn for overnight stays in May. But, as well as opening up for humans, we’ve also begun welcoming our first four-legged guests to our new dog-friendly suite, Busk Pike.
Latterbarrow, overlooking Hawkshead and Windermere, is one of Lakeland’s great viewing platforms. Standing at just 245m it nevertheless offers a wonderful panorama of Langdale, Helvellyn and much more in return for a relatively easy climb.
Everyone has heard of the famous high fells of the Lake District; peaks like Scafell Pike, Coniston Old Man or Helvellyn. But some of the best views in the area can actually be found on their more diminutive neighbours, which act as great viewing platforms for the surrounding landscape.
This low-level route takes you on a tour of some of the valley's historical features and, even if you’re not into that kind of thing, it’s a pretty walk nonetheless.
We love exploring the fells around Little Langdale, but you don’t always have to go uphill to have a good walk. This loop takes you over to Little Langdale’s big brother Great Langdale via some lovely native woodland with delightful views to the high fells of Pavey Ark and Harrison Stickle.
This seven mile walk takes you from the door of the Three Shires Inn to Tarn Hows, one of the Lake District’s most popular beauty spots. It is mostly on good tracks and roads, but there are some boggy sections on Holme Fell. It can also be surprisingly easy to get lost on Holme Fell in the fog!
Long expeditions into the fells may become less appealing as the days become shorter, colder and wetter. However, in Little Langdale we are blessed with a relatively short, but spectacular, loop which you can begin right from the door of the Three Shires Inn.
We count ourselves particularly lucky at the Three Shires Inn to host our own annual fell race. This year the race would have taken place on September 19 but, sadly, it had to be cancelled due to coronavirus.
