This 7 mile stretch of 15" narrow gauge railway was originally established to carry iron ore from Boot in the Eskdale Valley, to the Cumbrian town of Ravenglass back in the late 1800's.
Today, it's a popular visitor attraction and a fun day out for families and walkers alike. Tickets allow for breaks in your journey so the train ride is easily combined with walks and trails that pass by some intermediate stations.
Getting to Boot station at the head of the Eskdale valley from the Three Shires is straightforwards, although you'll need a head for heights as you cross the infamous Wrynose and Hardknott passes.
